The Trip
Here is a scan of a Google map of our trip - minus the SFO to
BUF and MEM to SFO links. Clicking on it will not take you to Google, but

And here is a simplified itinerary. I go for lots of detail, but Ana wants it done, now!
New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC,
Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas
Day 1: Fri 9/21 NY Fly to Buffalo.
Day 2: Sat 9/22 Wedding
Day 3: Sun 9/23 NY - Long Island Fly to JFK and take shuttle to my niece's: Ivone & Arnie
- Visit and stay overnight.
Day 4: Mon 9/24 NY - Manhattan and PA Up early, take train to Penn
Station (have baggage check area), then subway to WTC area and back to Penn Sta. Take Amtrak to Philly, taxi to Sheraton University City Hotel
Day 5: Tues 9/25 PA Philadelphia touring: Independence Nat'l Historic Park, including Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and original congress building. Take double-decker bus.
Day 6: Wed 9/26 PA & NJ Rent car and drive to Intercourse and
Bird-in-Hand in Amish Country and then head for Atlantic City and Tropicana Hotel. Dinner at Trump Plaza.
Day 7: Thurs 9/27 NJ, DE, MD & VA Drive to Cape May, take ferry to Lewes, DE. Drive on thru Delaware peninsula to Maryland, take bridge across Chesapeake Bay, and on to Alexandria and Arlington VA, including Henderson Hall, Ft Myers and the outside of Arlington Cemetery. End up
in MD, near Baltimore-Washington airport
Day 8: Fri 9/28 MD & DC Take MARC train to Union Station in Washington DC, take Tourmobile to main US historical points. Had a nice meal and drinks at Thunder Grill in Union
Station before train back to BWI.
Day 9: Sat 9/29 MD & IN Fly to Indianapolis, drive to Batesville for wedding at Stonebridge Inn
Day 10: Sun 9/30 IN & VA Brunch at Stonebridge
and fly to Richmond, VA. Stay at Richmond Airport Hotel
Day 11: Mon 10/1 VA & NC Out early to Jamestown: 1st permanent British settlement in US, on thru Hampton and bridge-tunnel back across southern Chesapeake Bay and into Norfolk and Virginia Beach, walk on the beach at Ocean City. Onward to Kitty Hawk, NC and Hilton Garden Inn, Outer Banks.
Day 12: Tues 10/2 NC & VA To Wright Brothers Museum and drive back from Outer Banks via Roanoke Is and thru wetlands to Rocky Mt and then Raleigh, NC. Saw museum and drove around the small capitol building and then to Danville, VA.
Day 13: Wed 10/3 VA & NC Out to find the Ol' 97 train wreck site and then on to Winston-Salem, old Salem & Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and overnight
at Hampton Inn in Cherokee, NC.
Day 14: Thurs 10/4 NC & GA Drive to Atlanta. Get off freeway downtown, took tour of CNN building. Drive to Marietta for evening.
Day 15: Fri 10/5 GA & TN Drive to Nashville TN thru Chattanooga and Hampton Inn, Nashville. Took shuttle downtown and explored: Ryman Auditorium, Country Music Hall of Fame, and the bars on Broadway.
Day 16: Sat 10/6 TN, MS & AR Drive to Memphis and to Graceland, and to West Memphis, AR overnight.
Day 17: Sun 10/7 TN, AZ & CA Fly home.
In all, to get to 10 (I count 11) states, we:
- flew 5500 miles in 9 flights
- drove 2200 miles in 3 rental cars
- covered 200 miles in 4 train trips
- took some 16 shuttles and cabs
- and even took the dreaded New York subway!
- personally I got zero new birds but I logged (that means
consumed) 21 new brands of beer.
This was all a bit tiring, but we're glad we did it now, while we still can!!
