From Stonehenge to

South Africa

February - March 2009

This was an OAT (Overseas Adventure Travel) trip [ click here for our trip ], originating in Walnut Creek, California, with veteran trip organizer , Ralf Parton.  It was an amazing trip for many reasons:
  • Ana signed us up and we were wait-listed - but fairly quickly accepted
  • I warned her that it was an out-in-the-woods-type trip: to my liking but not necessarily to hers - she had a great time
  • To use up our fast-devaluating frequent flyer mileage we had a layover in England - we went to Stonehenge
  • The OAT package was both a very good bargain and chock full of dawn (and pre-dawn)-to-dusk learning activities
  • On our first game drive Ana asked, "Are we going to do this again in the afternoon?" - she was soon into the whole scene
  • I logged 13 new beers, 137 new bird species, and did not get Montezuma's revenge!

Organization

Sequence is chronological, but separated by bush travel and cities.  Lines with Parts 1 & 2 are simply to break up lengthy pages, and are linked at the bottom of Part 1 for continuity.

Animals - we saw lots of animals in all of the safari locations, but there were so many animal images that I set up animal sections with the best shots.

Selection of images.  This was our first trip with a group, and the group concept was "enhanced" by most everyone (~12 out of 15) having a digital camera.  After a post-trip gathering at Ralf's, I ended up with over 2,000 images from only four of us.  Then it was an uphill battle to convince Ana that we could only print out a limited  amount, no matter how great the pictures were.  This "web chapter" reflects the general format and content of our 60-plus page photo album, and leaves out a bunch of great animal and people shots.  And, as you would expect in a personal photo album, you could argue for years about what shoulda been in it!

Credits - I list the photographers here whose images I used, but I make no attempt to credit each one on the pages.
