Ways to Recover from the 404 Error

Many 404's are due to files having been moved.  You can try the following to try to find the new pathname.

You click on something like this: http://www.someplace.com/directory/filename.html and get a 404.

Click on the location pointer in Netscape then click again to deselect it (or enter END) and delete "directory/" from the text, do return and the files may come up because "filename.html" is found in the root directory.  You can "backstep" this way thru several directory levels to see if you can find where the file has been moved.  There is no guarantee that you'll find the old file, but it is at least a way to try.

Another trick is to use the HOME key when in the location window, press delete twice and enter an "f".  Now you have "ftp" (file transfer protocol) instead of "http" (hyper-text transfer protocol).  Hit return.  If the server you are connected to allows ftp access you will see a column of folders or files.  Let's try looking for the file called "files98" and on the list of current files you find "files99"...hoo hoo!  They changed the file name for this year's stuff.  Click on this and you will open that file and return to http.

Of course a lot of errors come from long URL's and typing errors...can't help you there   :-)
